How Often Should You Get A Massage?

How Often Should You Get A Massage?

If you’re like most massage enthusiasts, you may want to know how often you should get a massage. The frequency at which you visit a massage studio depends on several factors. These include your:

  • Physical and emotional needs
  • Stress levels
  • Budget

Consider your body needs and your budget before deciding on the frequency and type of massage that’s right for you.

You can enjoy many health benefits from getting a regular massage. Massage can:

This article considers the various types of massages, the conditions that massages can help with, and how often you should get a massage.

What Are The Types Of Massages?

Before booking an appointment with a massage therapist, it’s helpful to know the different types of massage available. It’s also good to know about the specific health issues that each addresses. Do you need a massage that eases muscle tension? Would you prefer to improve flexibility or heals insomnia? Familiarizing yourself with the broad options of massage can help you make the right decision. Choosing the right type of massage can affect your health and wellness.

Here are some common types of massages you can choose from:

Swedish massage

Swedish massage is a type of full full-body massage. Swedish massage is very common. You can get it at clinics, spas and wellness centers around you. It’s helpful for people that are just recovering from injuries. It’s also ideal for managing stress and serious muscle pain.

With Swedish massage, you should expect lots of kneading, rolling and lifting of your body. The massage therapist combines various strokes to address problem areas. Swedish massage doesn’t hurt at all. This type of massage can be enjoyable if you go to a professional massage therapist.

There’s no limit to how often you can get a Swedish massage. You can get it as often as you feel like pampering yourself. If you’re getting it to speed up healing an injury or to reduce pain, you can get Swedish massage daily or a few times a week.

Aromatherapy Massage

Another type of massage you may consider is aromatherapy massage. Aromatherapy massage is a variety of Swedish massage. Your massage therapist combines soft touch and pressure with different essential oils. Essential oils like lavender and rose are usually used. Nonetheless, you can inform your massage therapist if you have a preference for a particular oil.

Aromatherapy massage is ideal for you if you have conditions such as digestion disorder, insomnia, headaches or back pain. It can also help to reduce stress, relieve muscle tension and boost your mood.

You can’t go overboard with an aromatherapy massage. You can get it daily, or a few times a week in the beginning. You can start spacing it out once you’re sure your muscles and tissues are in their best form. But, stretching the massage out too far can return your muscles to their old pattern.

P.S. Make sure you’re not allergic to the essential oil that will be applied on your body. This is important to prevent skin reactions.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a more concentrated type of massage. It targets the deeper layers of the muscles. The massage therapist applies intense pressure while working on your body. Deep tissue massage is usually recommended for people that are suffering from chronic muscle problems. This can include bone injuries, soreness or repetitive strain. It’s also ideal for correcting postural defect. To top it off, deep tissue can be used to address injuries or pain that inhibit proper mobility.

You may go for a deep tissue massage a few times a week or 5 to 7 times in a month. Your massage therapist should guide you on the frequency. It usually depends on the nature of the underlying health condition that prompts it.

Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage

As its name implies, prenatal massage is designed for expectant mothers. The massage takes care of their relaxation needs. Prenatal massage can reduce body pain and stress. It can also help with swollen ankles, especially in the later pregnancy months.

This massage uses some techniques that are associated with Swedish massage. The massage therapist applies soft pressure to your lower back, hips and legs. This type of massage is generally safe as it’s a way of getting relief from body pain without using medication. But, it’s advisable you consult your doctor or healthcare provider before going for the massage.

Prenatal and pregnancy massages should only last for 20-25 minutes. You can get this massage once or twice a week. You should visit a certified professional if you want to get the best results.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is a form of Japanese bodywork. The massage therapist applies pressure to the problem area using their fingers or hands. Shiatsu improves the flow of energy within the body. It also helps in regaining balance. This massage is ideal for people that want to relax and get relief from pain, stress and tension. It promotes physical and emotional calmness.

Recent studies reveal that shiatsu can help address health issues such as depression and migraines. It’s also effective in treating back pain, neck pain or insomnia. Most important, it protects your body against stress-induced issues.

You can get this type of massage a few times a month. In the case of insomnia or depression, you can make it a bi-weekly ritual. This may vary according to your needs. A professional massage therapist will give you the best advice on how often you should get a Shiatsu massage.

Hot Stone Massage

You should consider getting a hot stone massage if you want absolute relaxation. As the name implies, hot stone massage uses warm stones to ease specific points that need treatment. The massage therapist holds a heated stone as they carefully reach different points in your body. The warmth from the stones helps to loosen tight muscles.

Hot stone massage is ideal for people that are suffering from muscle pain and tension. It improves blood flow, relieves excruciating body pain and ultimately promotes relaxation. But, this type of massage isn’t appropriate for people with the following medical conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

You shouldn’t make a hot stone massage a daily ritual. Twice a month or three times in two months is fine. But, you should consult your doctor to know how often you should get this type of massage.

Massages For Conditions

Some conditions don’t need medication. Certain conditions can be treated with a soothing massage. The frequency at which you get a massage depends on the nature and seriousness of the condition.

Injuries

Whether you’re suffering from sports-related injury or a minor domestic one, you can visit your therapist on a weekly basis. Your therapist will guide you on the right type of massage you need. As you heal, you can start leaving more space in-between massage sessions.

Chronic Pain

For pain or discomfort caused by depression, IBS, or other health conditions, it’s recommended you visit your therapist once or twice a week. A regular massage can help speed up healing and make you feel great again.

Anxiety and Stress

Stress can be a direct result of working for longer hours or uncontrollable worry. You shouldn’t allow stress to get in your way to live a productive life. Massage is an effective way to manage stress. You should consider getting a soothing massage, like Swedish massage, daily or a few days each week. You can get this type of massage as often as necessary. Try to pay attention to when your life or a situation is taking its toll on your health.

Insomnia

Insomnia is characterized by the inability to sleep. This can develop into more serious health issues. Once you notice the symptoms, consider visiting your masseuse for the appropriate massage therapy. Massage has the ability to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This helps the body to achieve rest. You can make your appointment weekly or even more frequent.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, you’re more likely to gain weight. When this happens, you feel a lot of stress pushed down to your larger joints, like your hips and knees. The lower back also shares this pressure. The pressure tends to cause pain and inhibit proper mobility. A massage can significantly help relieve the pressure.

Make an appointment at a massage studio for a prenatal massage. But, make sure to wait until after your first trimester. Prenatal massage can be daily, weekly or bi-weekly. You should consult your healthcare provider to know what’s best for you.

Neck pain and back pain

A regular massage can ease neck pain and back pain. Studies have revealed that deep tissue massage performed for 30 minutes daily for a week can reduce pain in patients.

So, how often should you get a massage?

Well, there isn’t a straightforward answer to the question. This is because people have unique situations, requiring different solutions. Why you are getting a massage will determine how often you need one.

Talk to your healthcare provider before going for a massage. This is especially necessary if you have conditions such as cancer, bleeding disorder, open wounds or burns, osteoporosis, or fractured bones. Also, let your massage therapist know if you want to treat a particular health condition.

How To Keep Your Skin Looking Youthful

How To Keep Your Skin Looking Youthful

There is a popular saying that age is just a number. Well, if your skin is always popping and looking youthful, then you can say it with confidence. Youthful looking skin is a pressure point for many women, especially now that it is the social media era. Everybody wants to look good in their selfies.

As can be expected, there are probably hundreds of skincare routines out there. Each one promises to deliver the most astonishing results but many of them fail to deliver. The question still remains: How can you get your skin to look like you belong on the cover of allure?

In this article, you will learn about simple and effective skincare routines and facial treatments to keep you looking young and confident. Getting old is inevitable, and your skin changes the older you get. But you can become friends with your skin and persuade it to look good for longer. Follow the tips in this article and you will be well on your way to creating your own fountain of youth.

Your Skin And Ageing

Aging is a natural process that happens every day, as you grow older. There is really nothing you can do about that, but what you can do is slow it down. Make it go at a snail’s pace instead of a rabbit’s.

Part of the aging process that you should understand is that collagen is your best friend. Yes, you should take care of it, make sure it is happy and it will make your skin look great. What is collagen, you might ask?

Well, collagen is a protein that is produced by the cells in the body. It is the most abundant protein in the human body. Its main function is to “hold the body and skin together.” It is like a scaffold, providing structure and strength throughout the body, including your skin. It gives your skin that tight and elastic feel.

One of the reasons why babies and young kids’ skin look so good is because their skin constantly regenerates itself. But as you grow older, collagen starts getting tired and its production wanes. On top of this, unhealthy practices can easily damage existing collagen. These include sunlight exposure and bad skin habits.

The result of this is wrinkles, aging skin, and your entire youthful look going south fast. Luckily, though, all hope is not lost, you can keep your skin glowing. Yes, even if it has already been abused and looking old. There are two ways to go about this effectively, here is the first:

Your Facial Treatment Guide For Youthful Skin

Getting regular facial treatments is probably the best way to keep that glow on your skin. You have to be mindful of what you put on your skin, in what quantity and when not to put anything at all. If you master this, your skin will thank you by looking like a million bucks for much longer.

Interestingly, these skin treatments and routines are actually pretty easy to follow. Some, you probably even know already, but you have to be deliberate about making it a lifestyle. Looking good is easy, but you need to put in the work.

Here are some skincare and facial treatment tips that can get some of your skin glow back:

Use The Right Skin-Care Products

This sounds easy, but buying the right skincare products can be pretty tricky. There are many products out there that claim they contain ingredients that can make you look younger. You should beware of many of those products.

A lot of them do not contain any ingredients that are really beneficial to your skin. At least not in the way they advertise. It is better to stick to products that contain ingredients that have been proven to make your skin soft and younger-looking.

According to skincare professionals, when shopping for skincare products to keep your skin soft and youthful, there are three major ingredients that you should look out for:

– A serum containing the powerful antioxidant Vitamin C which will help to brighten your skin. It will also protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation.

Retinoids, which will stimulate the cells in your body to produce more collagen. Collagen keeps your skin tight, elastic and wrinkle-free.

– You should also consider adding an alpha hydroxy acid exfoliator. This will help you remove the top layer of dead skin cells.

Add these skincare products to your regular, daily facial treatments. Follow the instructions you see on the label and you will be well on your way to having soft and younger-looking skin.

It is also a good idea to start with one skincare product at a time. Before buying a new product, test it on your forearm first. If it stings or causes any form of irritation, stay away.

Read the instructions on the product carefully and make sure you do not overuse or underuse. Keep in mind that consistent use of a product in the recommended way will make it more likely to work for you. So be patient and give it time.

Moisturize and Exfoliate!

It does not matter what type of skin you have; dry, oily or anywhere in between. This is one skincare routine you do not want to miss out on if you are looking for that youthful appearance. On a daily basis, moisturize your face, neck, hands and anywhere else you need to. For better results, do it in the morning and at night before bed.

Exfoliating is another skincare habit that you need to fall in love with. A lot of times, your skin looks dull, not for any deep reason, but because a layer of dead skin has accumulated on top. This can leave your skin looking older than it actually is.

Exfoliation can help rid you of this build-up of dead skin. An easy way to incorporate exfoliating into your daily routine is to include a peel pad in your nighty facial care. For the best results, keep at it and make it a regular routine.

Wear SPF Every Day!

This point cannot be overemphasized. It does not matter what the weather outside is looking like, whether it is 90 degrees and humid or chilly and rainy. If you want a young-looking face, sunscreen must be added to your daily skincare routine.

The sun is your enemy when it comes to keeping your skin looking young and wrinkle-free. The primary reason for skin aging is exposure to UV radiation from the sun. So, if you are serious about keeping your youthful skin, you have to say bye-bye to tanning. Yes, it is a bummer but you should keep the sun as far away from your skin as possible.

Tanning repeatedly leads to dark age spots, early wrinkles and even in some cases, skin cancer. UV rays have also been known to speed up the aging process, causing thick, and damaged skin. In fact, it is the number 1 reason for early signs of aging.

Take It Easy On The Foundation

Tone it down with the foundation if you are serious about keeping your skin’s glow. This is because applying heavy makeup tends to make it settle in cracks and lines in your face, and that is not good.

What you really need to keep that face fresh is a tinted moisturizer or transparent moisturizing foundation. The goal is to keep your face hydrated and your pores unclogged. Try to stay away from powder-based foundations.

You might also want to use a primer before you apply your foundation. A primer provides a base for your foundation and allows it to roll on more smoothly. It minimizes dark circles and also makes your makeup last longer.

Say No To Glitter

When you use products with glitter or shimmer, it doesn’t help your skin stay youthful. This kind of makeup makes your wrinkles more visible. It does not flatter you in any way, especially if your skin is starting to have little lines or rough patches.

For your lids, choose a dark shade combined with lighter neutral shades. These are the best combinations for creating a youthful look. Also, do not use liquid liners, they tend to emphasize the delicate skin around your eyes. This might not be as flattering. Try opting for a soft pencil liner instead.

Be Mindful Of Your Neck

As you grow older, your neck tends to lose its elasticity, even more than any other part of your body. This is why you should pay attention to it in your moisturizing routines. Your neck and décolletage are just as important as your face, so make sure to be nice to them too.

You can create a separate skincare routine for your neck and décolletage too. Moisturize every night before bed. Exfoliate about once or twice every week with a gentle scrub. Finally, apply sunscreen daily. Do these consistently and you will soon have a good looking and smooth neck.

Pay Attention To Your Hands

Your hands are also parts that age on your body. They are visible to everyone around you. It is a good idea to take care of them the same way as your face or neck.

To have fresh and youthful hands, be sure to wear gloves while doing chores like washing plates. When you expose your hand to hot water or chemicals in cleaning products, they strip your hand of the protective lipid layer that your skin has. This makes your hand dry and susceptible to irritation and dryness.

You can combat this by moisturizing your hands as often as you can. Hand lotion is also a great way to go. Apply it on your hands before you wear your gloves to do any chores.

Now you know the skincare routines and habits that you can get into to give your skin the ultimate glow up. There is another aspect of this whole business of keeping your skin young and soft that you should be mindful of. Many people do not rate it but it can be a huge help if you pay attention to it.

Lifestyle Tips For Healthy Skin

Yes, many of your daily habits directly or indirectly affect the health of your skin in one way or the other. Some, you might not even be aware of, but these things add up. Here are some of those habits you need to either get rid of or get into if you want to maintain youthful skin:

Always Wash Off Your Makeup

Being exhausted is not a valid excuse for going to sleep with your makeup on. There is literally no upside to this. Not removing your makeup after the day is done leads to a build-up of oil and dirt and is not good for your skin.

The dirt can clog up your pores and will inevitably lead to breaking out, blackheads, and sometimes even a bacterial infection. You probably remember how annoying those can be when you were in your teenage years. Imagine having to deal with breakouts in your late 20s or 30s!

To make it easier for you, keep a packet of face wipes or a box of cotton pads and micellar water beside your bed. Just wipe it across your face and you can sleep.

Switch Sleeping Positions

This sounds funny, but it could affect your skin in subtle ways. Think about it, years of sleeping on your side or stomach. Pressing the side of your face to your pillow could manifest more lines and wrinkles on your face.

This might not be as important as other factors and habits, but it does add up. The best way to make this a non-issue is to try as much as possible to sleep on your back. If that is uncomfortable for you, then at least alternate which side of your face you sleep on.

Slow Down On The Booze

Drinking too much alcohol causes dehydration, which does not make your skin look its best. If you have to drink alcohol, then make sure you are also good at staying hydrated. Consume a glass of water regularly while you are drinking so you can keep your hydration levels high.

An effective alternative is to immediately use a serum with hyaluronic acid if you are feeling dehydrated. The hyaluronic acid functions to hydrate your skin by drawing moisture from the surrounding air into your skin.

Do Not Smoke So Much

Smoking is not only unhealthy for you internally, but it could play a part in your skin aging faster than it should. It can cause the breakdown of collagen in your skin, which in turn leads to loss of elasticity and saggy skin.

So, even if you are not the one smoking, second-hand smoke could have the same effect. If you are serious about having healthy skin for a long time, you might want to consider quitting smoking.

Get Your Daily Beauty Sleep

Stress is an inevitable component of life, no matter what you do. So far you have to wake up every day, leave your bed and do something, a component of stress is attached. The bad news is that stress is not very good for your skin. It can bring out blemishes, and cause dullness and rashes.

Even the simple action of furrowing your brow over and over again can create permanent lines on your forehead. One effective way to counteract the effects of stress on your skin is to make sure you get your beauty sleep.

Your skin repairs itself when you sleep. So not getting 8 hours every day can impede this process and make your skin look dull. That alone can make your skin look much older and rougher. Not to talk of the effects of the stress that you have gone through during the day that sleeping is not helping with.

Also, not getting adequate sleep can stimulate the production of a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol can cause a breakdown of collagen. Remember collagen? That awesome protein that keeps your skin tight and firm? Well, that is one protein you don’t want breaking down in your body.

There are several studies that have proven that there is a direct link between sleep and looking young. Make sure you sleep well every night, your skin will thank you for it.

Exercise regularly

You probably have heard this before. One of the several benefits of exercising is that it helps to keep your skin tone, giving it a gorgeous glow. It also helps you keep your stress levels down. Exercise can also help your skin shed dead cells and also boosts your mood. Exercising is really the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? Make time every week for some form of exercise or the other and stick to it.

Conclusion

Nobody wants to have saggy and unhealthy looking skin in their 20s or 30s. Some women still have great skin in their 40s and early 50s. This is possible, but you need to start taking care of your skin early and perform your facial treatments regularly.

Benefits And Risks Of Laser Hair Removal You Should Know

Benefits And Risks Of Laser Hair Removal You Should Know

Getting rid of hair on your body is one of the struggles of the modern woman. Come to think of it, the modern man has to deal with this too, only not as much. Most women would prefer a hair removal fairy godmother that gets rid of all the hair on their body at the wave of a wand.

Who wouldn’t want that? Sadly, that has not been invented yet. The truth is, when it comes to hair removal, there are several options available to you. It is a good idea to consider all the available alternatives before you decide which will work best for you.

One valid option is laser hair removal. It is a newer procedure that is popular for those looking for a semi-permanent solution. This article will talk about the benefits and risks of laser hair removal. So, you can review them before making your choice.

Hair Removal Options Available

There are quite a few reasons why you might want to remove your hair. One good reason is that body hair can be gross. You may want it removed totally and completely. You want that smooth finish, but how do you get it?

The easiest and probably most common option is to shave your hair. This takes only a few moments in the bathroom with your razor and cream. The main issue with this is that the hair you just shaved seems to materialize again out of thin air in a day or two. Nobody wants the hassle of having to shave everyday or every other day!

Another option is to use depilatory creams to dissolve the hair. This one is actually fun and maybe a little gross too. Lather the cream on and watch all your hair pull away. But then, you might end up smelling like a wet dog rolled in gasoline. Not very pleasant, huh?

Now, if you are in the market for a more permanent hair removal option, then sugaring or waxing is your go-to option. This process snatches your hair at the root and pulls it out. It is great for keeping your hair growth under wraps for a few weeks, but it has one major disadvantage. It hurts a lot, and itches a lot too when the hair finally grows back. You also have to deal with ingrown hairs.

Electrolysis can last a little longer for you. During the electrolysis process, a fine needle is inserted into each hair follicle. An electric current is then delivered directly to the hair follicle to basically kill it. Yes, that sounds painful. Yes, it most definitely is painful and could take up a lot of time too.

This brings us to laser hair-removal. There is a lot to say about this interesting procedure. The benefits, side effects, and if you should book a laser hair removal appointment today or not.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

In the simplest terms, laser hair removal is a medical procedure. It involves using a concentrated beam of light, that is, a laser, to remove unwanted hair. This is a fairly technical process. It is performed by a dermatologist and requires some explanation.

The aim of this process is to damage the hair follicle to discourage more hair growth. During laser hair removal, the beam of light targets the pigment cells in the hair follicle. Pigment cells or melanin cells are the ones responsible for the color of your hair.

The beam of light is converted to heat energy. This is absorbed by melanin, which in turn damages the hair follicles. These hair follicles are responsible for producing hair. Damaging them inhibits further hair growth. This process is a pretty effective way to stop hair growth in its tracks. FDA approved lasers that are used for this procedure usually include ruby, alexandrite, diode, and so on.

You should know that going through this process usually delays hair growth for a long period of time. But, it does not mean your hair is permanently removed. Hair follicles eventually heal themselves and the hair growth process continues. You might need a few procedures to have a chance at permanently stunting the hair growth process. So this is by no means a one-off treatment.

Also, laser hair removal produces the best results if you have light skin and dark colored hair. This is due to the melanin targeting nature of the procedure. Although, advances in technology have made it possible for people with dark-colored skin to enjoy the process, too. This process is not recommended for you if you have blond, red, grey or white hair. This is because these hair colors don’t absorb light well.

Benefits Of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal comes with a host of benefits, which is why it has become a popular process for hair removal. Here are a few of them:

Precision

The laser is highly targeted and can precisely select your hair strands without damaging the surrounding skin. Of course, this is only possible if there is a high level of contrast between your hair and skin.

This is why the process is not recommended for you if your skin and hair color are similar. It will be difficult for the laser to pick out your hair; hence damage to your skin might be inevitable.

Great Option For Hair Removal

The process is a good option for near-permanent hair removal. The results are quite predictable. You can be sure of not having to shave for weeks or even months, after a few sessions.

You also do not have to deal with painful and gross ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal helps you with that, unlike other methods of hair removal. Also, no more skin irritation from razors or epilating creams.

It Is Fast and Convenient

It is actually a fast process. Just a single pulse of the laser takes less than a second and can remove a lot of hair at the same time. Removing hair from a large area of your body takes only a few minutes.

It Isn’t So Painful

Compared to other hair removal processes including waxing and plucking, laser hair removal doesn’t cause as much pain. To help with the pain, some laser equipment comes with a personal air conditioning system. This constantly shoots a blast of cool air at the treated area.

Technicians can also numb the area and treat it with ice before and after the treatment. Also, the process gets progressively less painful as you continue your treatments. This is because your hair gets finer.

Flexibility

There is no limit to where you can get laser hair removal treatment on your body. Legs, face, armpits, bikini line, face, and anywhere else you want!

Disadvantages Of Laser Hair Removal

There are some disadvantages associated with this hair removal process. You should know them so you can weigh them in relation to the benefits before you make your decision. Here are some of them:

It is Expensive

You might add up all the money you would need to buy razors or pay for bikini wax sessions for years. It might just be up to what you pay for a laser hair removal session.

Clinics can charge a lot for each session. The consolation, though, is that you will save money in the long run. That is, when your hair growth has been all but eliminated after a few treatments.

It Is Not Suitable For Everyone Or Everywhere

As discussed earlier, the process is not recommended if you have certain skin or hair colors. It works best for those with a stark contrast between their hair and skin color.

Also, you should try to stay away from sensitive areas of your body when you go for sessions. Places like eyebrows, genitals, and men’s facial hair should not be treated.

Apart from the disadvantages of the laser hair removal process, there might also be some side effects. The word “laser” is not a very comforting word when talking about your skin, right? Most of these side effects are temporary and mild, though, but you should know about them anyway. Keep reading to find out what some of those risks are.

Side Effects Of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is not all rainbows and roses. There are some risks that you should be mindful of before booking that appointment. Here are some of them:

Redness and Irritation

The whole point of laser hair removal is to damage the hair follicle, right? Well, some people react to this and it manifests as redness and irritation in the treated areas. Those same areas might be tender and may even swell up a bit.

It is okay though; these symptoms usually disappear after a short period of time. These symptoms are like those you get from other hair removal processes like waxing. Some dermatologists use a topical anesthetic to manage the reaction.

Changes in Skin Color

This is one of the more popular laser hair removal risks. Some people might notice a slight change in the color of their skin following the treatment. It could either be lighter or darker than usual.

This usually happens if you do not avoid exposure to sunlight before or after treatment.

Blistering Crusting or Scarring

These are rare side effects that could occur as a result of getting the process done by an untrained technician. They could also happen if you treat a particular patch of skin too many times.

These are typically not so serious and can be managed by taking care of the treated area after the procedure. You can use a moisturizer on the area after. You should also make sure to visit qualified experts to get your laser hair removal treatment. Ask if they are certified and try to avoid “laser centers.”

Risk Of Eye Injury

This particular hair removal process involves the use of high-intensity lasers. That kind of light should not go anywhere near your eyes or it might damage them. This is especially important if you are having hair removed from your face.

You should not have laser hair removal treatment anywhere near your eyelids, eyebrows, or surrounding areas. Also, make sure you wear eye protection when undergoing the process. Your technician should too for that matter. Safety is important.

It is important to understand the risks and benefits of laser hair removal treatment. Especially before you sign up for a session. But there are also some peripheral things you should be aware of when considering this treatment. Before going into that, there are questions that many people ask about the treatment that should be addressed.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe During Pregnancy?

Experts do not recommend this hair removal treatment during pregnancy. This is mostly because it has not been proven that the process is safe for pregnant women.

Even though the hormonal changes during pregnancy might cause some hair to spring up in some unwanted places. You should resist the urge to get laser hair removal treatment. You can have one after the pregnancy and after waiting for a few weeks.

Does Laser Hair Removal Cause Infertility?

This is a popular myth about laser hair removal. The simple answer here is that it does not. You can even have laser hair removal around your groin region and you will be fine. This is because the lasers don’t go deep enough to cause any damage to internal organs.

Also, the lasers are targeted so they only touch the hair follicles. They cannot penetrate your muscles. Also, the high-intensity beam from the laser is made up of light energy. Light energy cannot affect DNA or cells because they cannot break particles apart.

Does Laser Hair Removal Cause Cancer?

The answer is still no, because of the same reasons given above. The beam from the laser is light energy and is not a type of ionizing radiation like x-rays. Those can pass through the body and affect cells on a basic level. But light energy cannot do that.

There is some radiation produced by the laser used in the laser hair removal process. But this is a very small amount and there is no evidence that this causes cancer.

Now that some of the questions and myths about laser hair removal have been addressed, there are more things to note about the process:

– You can’t pluck, dye or wax your hair when you are planning to get the treatment. They impede the process. If you want to be hairless during the period that you are getting the treatments, then shave.

– Avoid tanning beds, and sunbathing before and after the treatment. These activities make it difficult for the laser to target the melanin cells in your hair follicles.

– You should also avoid using perfumes, deodorants and any potential irritant before and after treatment.

– Avoid going to the gym, sauna, or having a hot shower for a while after the treatment. The heat from the lasers stays in your skin for about 24 hours after the treatment. You do not need more heat added to that.

– You should know that laser hair removal treatment can actually stimulate more hair growth in some cases. Ironic huh? Your dermatologist can let you know if you are in that group of people.

– You might have to switch up your beauty routine while getting the treatment. You should avoid using scrubs, retinol and glycolic acid creams for a few days before and after getting the treatment. It is also possible for your skin to get drier, so use extra moisturizers and face mists. Also, avoid chemical peels for about 1-2 weeks before and after the process.

At-Home Laser Hair Removal

In recent years, it has become possible to buy at-home laser hair removal devices. These devices are safe to use on all areas of the body where you would normally get the treatment at a salon. They could give fairly good results as well.

They might not be as effective as the commercial-grade equipment that salons use though. But they are perfect for you if you are shy about exposing your body to a technician at a salon. You can also enjoy using the device anytime you want in the comfort of your home.

Of course, they are cheaper than the average session at a salon. You can get one of these devices for about $500.

Cost Of Laser Hair Removal

Okay, this is the point where you might start wringing your hands. It actually costs a lot for even one session of laser hair removal at a salon or clinic. Of course, prices vary and usually depend on some factors, such as:

– Where you get the treatment (location)

– How often you get it (sessions)

– What treatment you get (what part of the body)

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of getting laser hair removal treatment is about $285. Different body parts attract different costs. Your dermatologist will recommend the number of sessions you need. A full body laser hair removal treatment could cost thousands of dollars.

Conclusion

There you have it, some of the benefits and side effects of laser hair removal that you should know before deciding if you want to get it. The laser hair removal treatment is effective and can provide a long term solution to unwanted hair growth. It is also a procedure that requires technical knowledge and should not be done without proper research.

What Are The Different Eyebrow Techniques?

What Are The Different Eyebrow Techniques?

The world keeps evolving, the clock keeps ticking and the beauty industry is not left behind. In fact, it’s catching up faster than you think. Who doesn’t want flawless skin, manicured nails, and beautiful eyebrows?

Speaking of eyebrows, it’s kind of like the Swiss army knife of the human body. You’ll find that they are essential, and botched eyebrows ARE A DISASTER. So how do you keep your brows in tip-top shape?

Lucky for you, the answers you seek are right in this article.

Get To Know Your Brows

First things first though, you need to know what kind of eyebrow shape will suit your face. There is no one size fits all, when it comes to brow shaping and there is nothing more disconcerting than an arch gone wrong.

Be it round, oblong, or heart shaped, different face shapes need different eyebrows. You might want a professional’s opinion on this. There’s no sense in getting it wrong from the start and ruining the whole process right? It is not impossible to get it right yourself but it will take a bit of figuring out. Decide what face shape you have then the specific type of eyebrows that suit that face shape.

Each person has a different eyebrows. But, they usually fall within these five categories:

  • Straight
  • Rounded
  • S- shape
  • Hard- angled
  • Soft-angled

These different eyebrow shapes suit different face shapes. For instance, a long hard-angled eyebrow shape goes well with a rounded face. Those with oblong faces will look good with shorter brows that have a soft arch. To make this decision easier, you can use a brow pencil to draw the various shapes on your brow and see what it looks like. Usually the best shape for you would follow the natural contours of your brows. Be sure to get a second and third opinion before proceeding.

What Are The Different Eyebrow Techniques?

Grooming your eyebrows doesn’t always mean a lot of maintenance. But it does require consistency and know-how. Let’s look into the easier DIY techniques then we’ll proceed to the more complex and professional.

The Occasional Trim

Eyebrow Plucking

This involves the use of tweezers, to pull hairs from their follicles one by one. It sounds quite painful but a numbing cream can be applied to reduce the pain. This method is easy to do and doesn’t require a lot of expertise, all you need are the right tools. You’ll need a spoolie brush, tweezers, blade or tiny scissors and a steady hands. All you need to do is use the spoolie to brush your brows upwards towards your hairline. Then, snip off the tips of the extra long hairs that exceed your desired shape. Comb the hair to the side then tweeze out any extras that don’t go with your natural arch. Brush again and then trim any loose ends.

Note: When trimming, take your hair off a little at a time, so you don’t leave a patch missing from your brows.

Another cool trick is to use a brow pencil or stencil to outline your desired shape before you begin. That way, you have a guideline to work with.

Threading

Although this can look a bit intimidating, threading isn’t complex at all. It is an accurate technique for pulling out unwanted hair. It is more time consuming and painful than waxing. But, if you are looking for precision, threading is appropriate. Twisted thread-like strands are used to catch the hairs and pull them out in a smooth, straight line. Though it’s not so difficult, the hand coordination involved will take some getting used to. Threading usually lasts 4- 6 weeks. It depends on how fast your hair grows before another touch up is necessary.

Waxing

Waxing can be very useful, especially when you have full eyebrows and don’t want to pluck, waxing is the way to go. Waxing has been around for quite some time and is popular when it comes to removing unwanted hair. It is possible to wax your eyebrows yourself, but due to the small area involved in brow waxing, precision is key. You don’t want to rip out large chunks of your eyebrows. Although it might sting a bit, the results are well worth the pain as it leaves your brows smooth and neatly shaped.

More Professional Eyebrow Techniques

Now onto the more professional and semi-permanent eyebrow techniques:

Microblading

Also called embroidery, feather touch or hair like strokes, microblading is the latest fad in makeup all over the world. It is not the only semi-permanent method out there, but it is becoming the most popular.

Microblading goes as far back as 25 years ago and is said to have originated in Asia, like threading. It is like tattooing. It is achieved by drawing individual hair like strokes with a small hand held tool made of many tiny needles. This is unlike the more traditional methods of tattooing, which are done with a machine and single needle. Microblading deposits semi-permanent pigment in the top most layer of the skin (the upper region of the dermis) by making fine slice like strokes with several needles.

Microblading is often used to replace individual strands and enhance or reshape eyebrows. It is a miracle worker for individuals with scanty or patchy brows and has a very natural look about it.

This particular method is more time consuming than your walk in wax job, taking up to two hours to complete. First an appointment must be made with a specialist. This isn’t some run of the mill production and it requires special training. It is a meticulous process. The first hour is dedicated to drawing the brow outline with an erasable pen. This part is crucial as this is when the shape of the eyebrows is decided. The next hour, the small handheld needles are used to make the incisions and deposit the pigments accordingly.

It is not usually a painful process, as a numbing cream is applied before you begin. Some people may experience slight discomfort though. After the two hour or so marathon, you brows are ready for a selfie and you are good to go. It usually takes about 25-30 days to heal up, after which a pre scheduled touch up is required. Once that’s taken care of, your new brows are good to go for about 8-12 months.

Ombre powder fill

Yes, microblading has taken the makeup world by storm, but ombre powder fill has actually been in existence for decades.

It is actually a longer lasting eyebrow technique, with about 12-18 months without need for a touch up. Ombre powder fill is achieved by applying thousands of tiny dots of pigment that is inserted into the upper layer of the skin. These gradually build up a color and a defined shape.

It initially created darker and more solid looking brows. This is probably the reason why it didn’t gain much popularity. But in recent times it has been able to achieve a more natural looking and flawless brows. On the plus side, if you have oily or combination skin that doesn’t work well with microblading, this might interest you. If you like filled in eyebrows without the extra 30 minutes every other morning, the Ombrè powder fill is right for you.

Hybrid brows

A hybrid brow, also called combo/fusion brow, is a combination of micro pigmentation, used in Ombre powder fill, and microblading. Micro-pigmentation is a method done with a digital machine that implants pigments a little deeper into the skin. This creates a soft, smooth powdery look.

This micropigmentation and blading combo give a natural looking brow. It looks a bit more shaded than microbladed brows. But, it is also more defined and less dramatic than the ombre powder fill.

Typically, the hybrid brow costs more than either of the combos but not enough to break the bank. It also lasts longer as well. It works well for everyone. Each brow is tailored to suit each individual based on their skin type, bone structure, coloring and desired look.

Nano blading

Nano blading expert Laura Kay, founder of Laura Kay London states, “Nano blading is a new brow treatment that uses ultra- sharp nano needles that can actually mimic the diameter and dimension of a real hair in the skin.”

So how exactly is it different from microblading? It isn’t, it is more like a super enhanced version with finer, more flexible needles. Nano blading uses the same process as the microblading technique, with fine hair strokes. But, nano blading is much more precise in its delivery. This is because the tiny blades are compacted together to form one fine blade. This means the artist or technician can apply more accurate pressure. The pigment used is a finer quality than the one used in microblading.

Like microblading, a patch test will be carried out at least 24 hours before the procedure. This is done to ensure that there is no allergy or negative reaction to the pigment that will be used. You’ll also need to go for two sessions, four to eight weeks apart to add the finishing touches to your look. But you’ll be able to leave after the first procedure with gorgeous looking eyebrows. Yes, it still hurts a little more than a brow wax or tweezing job. But a numbing cream will also be applied to ease your discomfort. There may be some redness or swelling around the brow area for a couple of days or weeks. Don’t worry, it is perfectly normal, your brow area will be tender after the procedure. That said, you might not want to plan any major events for at least a month or two. You also want to make sure to apply the healing cream as prescribed and avoid activities that’ll make you sweat.

Additionally, exposure to the sun, laser or light treatment, swimming, exercising, and rubbing certain cosmetics around the eye area should be avoided. This will help you avoid negative reactions on your skin.

Eyebrow extensions

Now this is one eyebrow technique that raises a few eyebrows. Yes, you can have extensions on your eyebrows. They are like lash extensions, though a typical procedure could be 90 minutes long. It involves gluing natural looking hairs directly on top of your existing eyebrows. If you have patches it can be glued on your skin. It is great for reshaping or restructuring your arch, but it only lasts approximately 2 weeks. With oily or combination skin it could be even less.

Eyebrow extensions are usually not generic, so it can be customized to suit your demands. For the first 24 hours after the process, you have to keep them completely dry to make sure the glue adheres. If you want to look your best you need to take care of it properly between refills. You’ll have to be less rigorous when taking a shower or applying makeup. When you get the extensions in, there’s no need to apply extra products to your brows. But, if you must, make sure you aren’t using any water proof formulas. Those formulas are dehydrating and difficult to get off. The oil based makeup cleansers can break down the glue in the extensions. This reduces its “life span” on your brows, and you don’t want that.

It is important to know that these extensions don’t work for everyone since they require so much care. Please go to your specialist with a realistic picture in mind. Yes, they look great and it is a great boost, especially for those with scanty brows. But maintenance is the key in this instance. Lack of adequate care will leave the brows looking lack-lustre, so consult with your specialist before you make a decision.

Brow Care Tips

Now that you’ve looked at a lot of different eyebrow techniques, let’s talk about how you can take care of your brows.

  • Don’t Fret. This is number one on the brow care list. Fretting will cause you to make bad brow decisions which will lead to disaster.
  • Let it grow. Don’t be in a hurry to pluck those brows every other day. The temptation is strong but you can resist. Let them grow at their own pace, especially if you’ve just had a bad job and they’ve seen better days. Groom them regularly and when you’re due for another trim, make the right choice.
  • Oil them! Your brows are made up of hair and needs moisturizing. It’ll stimulate growth if you massage it in while applying the oil. You’ll also have smoother, silkier brows if you do.
  • Invest in brow tools. You need a good, sharp pair of scissors. A high-quality pair of slanted tweezers will do the job when it comes to those small and stubborn strands. A spoolie or eyebrow comb will help you with grooming. Eyebrow stencils are also invaluable, especially if you’re a beginner and haven’t mastered the art of filling in your eyebrows.
  • Find out what eyebrow technique works best for you. Some can’t stand the pain of threading. Others can’t afford microblading, so stick with what you are comfortable with.
  • Keep it clean. Do you take the time to unclog your pores and do some in depth cleaning, especially after wearing makeup? If the pores of your hair follicles are clogged then you aren’t giving the hairs any room to grow.
  • Spend that cash. The amount you spend to get a professional brow job done is worth every tear you’ve ever shed on a brow job gone wrong. It is just not worth it to save all that money and go around looking like Captain Caveman. Say yes to quality and remember, ‘life is too short to go around with bad brows.

How To Maintain Healthy Skin During The Winter

How To Maintain Healthy Skin During The Winter

Your skin reacts differently as weather changes. Whether it is chilly winter or sweltering summer, weather has effects on your skin. Winter, especially with extreme coldness and low humidity, can leave your skin dry, flaky and rough. It’s impossible to prevent seasonal transition. But, you can take certain measures to minimize the undesired effects the weather has on your skin.

This article takes a look at how the cold climate affects your skin and what you can do to keep your skin protected. You will also learn how to refashion your lifestyle to manage the climate’s effects on your skin. Following the tips provided here will help you maintain healthy, glowing skin throughout the year.

Why Cold And Low-Humidity Weather Affects Your Skin

You might be curious to know why and how a change in weather affects your skin. The skin is a sensitive part of the body. It reacts easily to changes in the physical environment. When factors such as temperature and humidity change on a dime, it becomes a shock to the skin. This is because the skin likes some consistency that nature can’t offer.

Each time there’s a major shift in weather, the prevalent climate takes its toll on your skin. During the winter months, the climate becomes colder with drier air. The drop in the level of humidity speeds up the loss of moisture from the skin. As a result, you have to work harder to maintain hydration to neutralize the climate’s effect on your skin.

In colder climates, your skin is more likely to experience dryness and flakiness due to loss of hydration. The chances are much greater, especially if you’re prone to eczema or other dry skin conditions. The cold weather and wind can cause cracks in the outer skin layer and inflammation. These conditions can severely affect the overall health of your skin. Dermatologists attribute symptoms such as inflammation and irritation to disruption in the skin barrier during this period.

Sudden Temperature Changes

As you alternate between the cold outdoors and heated buildings, your skin reacts to the sudden temperature changes. These changes can result in conditions mentioned earlier. Exposure to different temperatures forces the capillaries in the face to contract and expand rapidly. This process leads to broken veins and skin redness.

You can limit the risk of broken veins and inflammation by reducing the temperature difference between the warm indoors and freezing outdoors. You can achieve this by wrapping up in the cold and not overdoing it with central heating. Applying a light layer of barrier cream and products with anti-inflammatory ingredients can also help.

Common Practices That Negatively Affect Your Skin During Winter Months

Experts have noted that a drop in temperature and humidity isn’t the only factor responsible for most of the skin problems people experience during winter. The sudden switch in weather coupled with survival measures for the cold is the major cause. Lifestyle changes can exacerbate weather-induced skin conditions. This can include taking long, hot showers, having long soaks in the tub or using central heat in homes.

1. Hot Bath and Shower

When the weather becomes cold, the next thing most people want to do is get in a hot bath or shower to keep their body warm. This option becomes more desirable, especially if you’ve spent long hours outdoors. Having long soaks in the tub or hopping in a soothing shower can be truly relaxing. But how often do you consider the effects of the practices on your skin. Let’s break it down:

According to dermatologists, hot baths and showers can dissolve the protective barrier in the skin. This ultimately leads to skin dehydration. You shouldn’t confuse dry skin with a dehydrated skin. Dry skin is a skin type while dehydrated skin refers to a skin condition.

Dry skin is characterized by the lack of oil because the skin produces less sebum than normal skin. The inadequate production of sebum means the skin is deficient of the lipids it requires to retain moisture. This also builds a strong barrier to protect the skin against external aggressors. This is not the case with skin dehydration. Dehydrated skin doesn’t have enough water. The condition is traceable to external factors. These include cold, low-humidity weather, diet and caffeine consumption.

Bathing with hot water is a strategy to keep your body warm. But it sucks much more water from your skin, leaving it dehydrated. During winter, it’s not uncommon to find many people with rough, red, cranked or peeling skin. Some skin conditions such as eczema can also flare up during this period.

To reduce the level of damage to your skin, consider having warm baths and showers instead. You should also apply moisturizer daily to up the water content within your skin.

2. Highly Intensive Central Heating

As the cold becomes more intense during winter months, most households and public places depend on their radiators to supply warmth. Radiators appear to be a more affordable option during this time. But are you aware of the impact the heat coming from the machine has on your skin?

Heated air in homes and offices further reduces humidity levels. This leads to evaporation of water from your skin. As a result, you’re more likely to have to battle with cracking, flaking and irritation. The heat leaves your skin with a dull and parched complexion. It can also make you more prone to breakouts, especially if your skin is oily.

The drying effects of harsh central heating can be reduced by investing in a humidifier. Humidifier keeps the air moist, thereby improving the water content of your skin. If you can’t afford a humidifier, dermatologist recommend placing a few bowls of water near your radiators. This helps in balancing the temperature.

Because of the side effects of a central heating system. It’s advisable to drink plenty of water. This will replenish the moisture you lose to the heat. You should also not forget to apply your moisturizer, and lip balm as often as necessary.

Typical Cold Weather Diets

Other than hot baths, showers and heated air, your diet can also affect your skin. This is especially true if you have oily, acne-prone skin. Studies have revealed that diets that are high in processed carbs may trigger or worsen acne. Foods with a high glycemic index (the level of glucose in the blood) raise sugar levels. The spike in sugar levels leads to an increase in the level of hormones responsible for oil production.

To be on the safe side, don’t go overboard on sugary treats, pasta, white bread, potatoes, and other such foods. You should up your intake of foods that have a low glycemic index, like oatmeal, fruits and brown rice. This way, you can avoid diet-related breakouts and flare-ups during the winter.

How To Maintain Healthy Skin In Cold Weather

The following tips will help you maintain healthy skin throughout the winter:

Limit warm showers

As the weather transitions from summer into winter, longer showers become common. It’s recommended to limit showers to no more than five minutes. Avoid frequent contact with hot water. Prolonged hot baths or showers dissolve protective layers in the skin and escalate dehydration.

Use gentle, nourishing body wash

During winter months, you’re advised to go for a light body wash. You can consult your dermatologist for recommendations on the right product for your skin type. You should also follow up with a thicker body cream than you would during hot, summer months.

Apply moisturizer as often as necessary

With more moisture being lost out to the dry air, you want to replenish your skin’s water content. Applying moisturizer within one minute of coming out of the shower is good for your skin. You should look for a product that contains glycerin, ceramides and hyaluronic acid. You can also include this in your facial treatment routine throughout this period.

Use hydrating serum

Winter is a time when everyone is more likely to experience skin dehydration. Regardless of your skin type. Do you want to maintain healthy skin during the winter months? Try integrating a hydrating serum into your regimen. But never skip out on your moisturizer, regardless of the amount of hydrating serum you use.

Additionally, you can consider oil-based massages such as aromatherapy. This type of massage uses essential oils that can help your body increase hydration.

Creamy cleanser

Oil-removing cleansers are great in the hot and humid months. But your skin requires creamy cleansers during the colder months. A creamy cleanser helps your efforts to maintain hydrated, satin-smooth and healthy skin.

Conclusion
